La phase 3 de FIDAfrique lancé à Nairobi

L’atelier de démarrage du programme FIDAfrique/IFADafrica s’est tenu du 20 au 22 avril 2009 à Nairobi au Kenya. Il a réuni plus de 120 participants venus des projets et programmes FIDA de toute l’Afrique subsaharienne, des réseaux thématiques d’Afrique de l’Est et du Sud ainsi que des réseaux partenaires d’Amérique Latine et d’Asie (Enrap, Fidamerica).

La rencontre a marqué le lancement du nouveau réseau subsaharien de promotion du partage des savoirs et des innovations pour la réduction de la pauvreté rurale en Afrique.

El Centro de Información de Recursos Naturales de Chile (CIREN) ofrece acceso abierto a su patrimonio documental.

El CIREN, es una institución que proporciona información de recursos naturales renovables y ha logrado reunir la mayor base de datos georeferenciada de suelos, recursos hídricos, clima, información frutícola y forestal que existe en Chile, además del catastro de la propiedad rural. CIREN ha sido aporte en la resolución de problemas como sequías, inundaciones, conservación de los suelos, y para los diagnósticos de reconstrucción en zonas afectadas por desastres naturales.

En la actualidad, el Centro articula el convenio de cooperación entre el Ministerio de Agricultura y la Agencia Chilena del Espacio, para acceder y administrar los datos espaciales del satélite SSOT en la codificación, el procesamiento de información satelital, y la interpretación de imágenes y datos referentes a la agricultura y recursos naturales.

En el 2007, se adjudicó a CIREN el proyecto “Conversión a formatos digitales de la documentación de Recursos Naturales impresa y su liberación al ciber-espacio”, presentado al Concurso Nacional para proyectos de innovación de interés público e innovación pre-competitiva de Innova Chile. De esta manera el Centro de Documentación en Línea de CIREN digitalizó el patrimonio documental de mayor demanda y vigencia sobre recursos naturales, fortaleciendo y ampliando su acceso abierto y gratuito.

Su repositorio de documentos se encuentra en su Biblioteca Digital de Recursos Naturales y ha sido desarrollado con el reconocido software libre Greenstone.

Pretoria Vet Sciences library reaches out with accessible tools

Earlier this year, this blog reported several discussions on future library services in agriculture.

One of the approaches advocated was to transform libraries into more proactive spaces where information and knowledge are exchanged, often using new tools and approaches.

The Veterinary Sciences Library at the University of Pretoria offers us some good examples of what can be done, in a pragmatic way:

• The home page gives lots of search and navigation options (catalogue and google)
  
• They use Dspace for the South African National Veterinary Repository
  
• The Veterinary Science Dean supports open access and his Faculty staff also contribute to the university repository
  
• The library pages can be bookmarked on services like Delicious using an 'addthis' widget
• The library's newsletter Infomania has a range of views and stories, as well as practical tips beyond 'pure' libraries
• They engage in several special projects and international networks linked to their mandate
  
• Their blog reports on major developments in the library services. The postings on service plans (for 2009) and achievements (in 2008) are especially useful - and offer transparency.

As we look at ways to enhance the accessibility of agricultural information, such cases can help us identify the large and small pathways we can all adopt.

Data management principles for natural resources management

On a day when the CIARD initiative convenes a small group in Rome to work on some principles and pathways to more accessible research outputs, we can glean useful lessons from the "checklist for guiding principles for data management" put together in the NLWRA/ANZLIC Natural Resources Information Management Toolkit:

• Don't reinvent the wheel: Expedite the project process by not reinventing the information management wheel. Look for efficiencies in data collection: Where possible data should be captured once for multiple/generic use.
  
• Share wherever possible: Where possible share data and foster the development of networks and partnerships.
  
• Present a sound business case: Data collection is expensive. There must be good business justification to support any data collection activity.
  
• Reduce duplication: Avoid duplication in data acquisition. Where possible team up with others.
  
• Look before you collect: Find out what already exists. Look for existing point-of-truth and authoritative datasets.
  
• Fitness-for-purpose: Undertake fitness-for-purpose assessments prior to using external datasets.
  
• Classification systems: Check for standards and existing classification systems or methodologies. Use existing systems and facilities wherever possible.
  
• Think beyond your immediate use: Manage data to maximise their value both during and after the project. Give priority to the broadest value data that are of benefit to multiple processes.
  
• Data custodianship: Select the most robust organisation with the broadest span of interest as the most appropriate custodian of high-value general use information. Reinforce and support data custodians and where possible negotiate access arrangements.
  
• Metadata: Complete metadata documentation is required for every dataset to demonstrate best practice. Metadata provides information about datasets such as accessibility, currency, completeness, fitness-for-purpose and suitability for use.

The Telegraph of India reports that farmers in Jharkhand State are now "hooked" to their cellphones as a way to gain an advantage in markets.

ICRISAT adopts green open access mandate for its scientific publications

The Business Standard reports that ICRISAT "has formally launched an open access (OA) system for its scientific publications."

According to William Dar, ICRISAT Director General: "Our Institute’s Green OA Mandate is in keeping with our guiding principle of developing international public goods, and it will further demonstrate the public value, and social and economic relevance of Icrisat’s research."

China farmers broaden agricultural knowledge with broadband

According to a recent China Daily article, "The Internet helped a farmer in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region dig a bigger bonanza last year without leaving his door. Using a computer mouse along with his hoe, Li Haigang more than doubled his annual income to 100,000 yuan after buying a computer in 2006 to broaden his agricultural knowledge."

Data and information management toolkit

Australia's National Land and Water Resources Audit and ANZLIC Natural Resources Information Management Toolkit is a set of modules to help groups "discover, access, visualise and manage their data and information."

The "contemporary view of sustainable management of natural resources is that it is best achieved by ... involving the development of strong cooperative partnerships between government bodies, the community, on-ground land managers and educational institutions." This implies that each of these groups has to be able to effectively manage data and information.

"The Toolkit has been designed to provide universal principles of best practice for data and information management." It has a particular emphasis on capacity building and spatial data - though the principles apply much wider.

FAO's A/H1N1 Information Portal on the Crisis Management Center - Animal Health

In light of the global repercussions of transboundary animal diseases on animal health and trade, and on human health, response efforts must be fast, well coordinated and strategically planned to help stop diseases before they spread.

The Crisis Management Centre - Animal Health (CMC-AH) is FAO’s rapid response mechanism for transboundary animal disease emergencies. The Centre provides technical and operational assistance to help governments develop and implement immediate solutions to prevent or stop disease spread.

With a direct link to FAO’s Emergency Prevention System for Transboundary Animal and Plant Pests and Diseases (EMPRES), the Centre daily tracks the animal disease situation worldwide through information received from the Global Early Warning System (GLEWS). Daily risk analysis and decision-making allow the Centre to stay abreast of developments to respond rapidly and effectively.

En Aysen (Chile): Abren concurso para “iluminar” con tecnología WI-MAX zonas rurales de la región

Un “concurso de conectividad rural” ejecutado por Innova Chile de CORFO, busca captar el interés de empresarios y productores de la región, para la construcción de antenas WI- MAX en diversas localidades rurales, a fin de que los pobladores cuenten con acceso a Internet. El concurso apunta a cubrir con aplicaciones o servicios de tecnologías de la información a aquellas zonas que van a ser “iluminadas” por medio del fondo de desarrollo de las telecomunicaciones.

Una vez que el proyecto sea entregado el año 2011, se estima que la cobertura regional de conexión a Internet llegaría a un 90 por ciento. "...vamos a tener aplicaciones que pueden ser servicios de reserva de turismo, servicios agroclimáticos, servicios para la acuicultura, para la trasabilidad, entre otros, que no existían y lo que queremos es que la gente concurse por esos servicios”, expresó el subdirector de Tecnología, Información y Comunicaciones de Innova Chile de CORFO.

De esta forma se estima promover la alfabetización digital en la población rural, la generación de contenido, el desarrollo de aplicaciones y herramientas tecnológicas innovadoras en las empresas pyme que integran las cadenas productivas.

México: cuenta SLP con sistema de monitoreo agroclimático

El gobierno estatal informó que ante la temporada de lluvias, dispone de una red de monitoreo agroclimático que permite alertar de eventuales contingencias por cambio de temporal, a fin de tomar las medidas correspondientes.

El mecanismo permite, además de proteger siembras y ganado de eventuales fenómenos meteorológicos, contar con información a fin de decidir qué y cuándo es más conveniente sembrar, de acuerdo con los pronósticos de las temporadas.

Adicionalmente, con este sistema es posible apoyar las decisiones relacionadas con la seguridad alimentaria nacional, por parte de las dependencias e instancias del sector agropecuario, con la estimación de las cosechas esperadas.

Zain and Ericsson bring mobile tech to rural areas in Nigeria

Middle East and African mobile network provider, Zain, and leading telecom equipment supplier, Ericsson, are working with the United Nations to help alleviate poverty and empower rural people in Nigeria.

Both companies are involved in the Millennium Villages Project, which is run by the Earth Institute at Columbia University, Millennium Promise and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The chosen site for the project in Nigeria is Pampaida, in the Ikara Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

The Millennium Villages Project is a community-based initiative designed to help people in rural areas improve agricultural production, which is the foundation of the region’s economy. Additional benefits include improving access to health, education and infrastructure.

Bill Gates, FAO chief ponder anti-hunger fight

Bill Gates co-chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and FAO Director-General Jacques Diouf met in Rome to discuss the role of agricultural development in reducing world hunger and poverty. They also addressed the longer-term challenges to agriculture, including the impact of the global economic crisis on poor countries.

FAO currently has a direct grant from the foundation of $US 5.6 million over two years, to improve the quality and accessibility of national and sub-national statistics on food and agriculture development in 17 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. The agency also collaborates as part of the implementation of a 5-year grant for $164.5 million to the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), an African-led organization, for its work with small farmers, and a 3-year grant for $26.8 million to Cornell University, for development of resistance to wheat rust.

FAO launches animal welfare web portal

A new internet portal has been launched by FAO that will serve as a one-stop-shop for individuals and organizations searching for the latest information about the welfare of livestock.

The Gateway to Farm Animal Welfare is designed to provide a reliable information conduit on legislation and research findings in the sector, as well as on animal welfare standards, practices and policies. Expected users are farmers and government officials, lawmakers, researchers, the livestock and food industry and non-governmental organizations.

América Latina en busca de la conexión

Los gobiernos de la región son concientes de que las telecomunicaciones tienen un rol fundamental en la competitividad y el desarrollo económico y social de sus países. Por ello, es un sector que avanza, pero aún falta por hacer.

América Latina ha realizado importantes esfuerzos en el desarrollo del acceso a las TIC, lo que se ha notado principalmente en la penetración de telefonía móvil, no obstante, “a pesar de estos esfuerzos, la brecha digital se incrementa cuando hablamos de tecnologías más avanzadas, como por ejemplo Internet de banda ancha, cuya tasa de penetración en la región es de 3% de la población versus 22% un en Europa”.

El promedio de acceso a computador en los hogares de áreas urbanas es nueve veces más alto que el acceso a computador en los hogares de zonas rurales. Por ejemplo en Perú la tenencia de computador en los hogares urbanos es de 21% en 2007, en tanto que en los hogares rurales esta tasa alcanza el 1%.

Africa - Climate Change: From Awareness to Adaptation

The need to reduce climate impacts on communities, homes and public institutions has informed the Environment and Development in the Third World (ENDA), Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa (FARA) and IGAD Climate Prediction and Applications Centre (ICPAC) to team up with Institute of Development Studies and create AfricaAdapt.

Established to reduce human vulnerabilities in an age when climate change becomes a threat, FARA coordinator, Ms Jackeline Nman said AfricaAdapt “is the first pan-African network dedicated to climate change adaptation on the continent.” Agreed that it has brought untold stories of miseries on families and communities in the last decade, Nman said the network was created “to reduce human suffering and vulnerabilities, which climate change often occasion.”

She said the network took cognisance of some constraint to realising its set objectives. Nman said “AfricaAdapt will overcome linguistic and geographical divides ensuring that knowledge that can help vulnerable communities adapt to the changes taking place is accessible to anybody exploring responses to climate change.” The network is using different fora and media to create climate change awareness and inculcate a culture of climate adaptation that can help mitigate climate impacts. This is evident in the statement of FARA coordinator when she said the network “depends on interactive website, our events, specialised radio broadcasts and support for innovation will facilitate the sharing of knowledge on how to reduce climate impacts on Nigeria with other researchers and vulnerable communities across the continent. AfricaAdapt is free to access and open to any individuals and organisations working on climate change adaptation in Africa.

“The website will be a platform connecting users according to their areas of interest and their activities. We believe African media have a key role to play in facilitating the sharing of knowledge with our communities. This is why we will work with community-based radio stations and seek opportunities to collaborate with journalists across the region. Such experiences and research could help vulnerable communities elsewhere in Africa to adapt to climate change. This is what AfricaAdapt was set up to do,” Nman stated.

CIAT Semana para Compartir Conocimiento

Entre este lunes 18 y el 22 de mayo se realiza la Semana para Compartir Conocimiento 2009 (KSW09), uno de los eventos institucionales anuales más importantes del CIAT.

Dentro de la agenda de presentaciones y discusiones de proyectos y planeación de actividades habrá espacio para la revisión y ajuste del Plan de Mediano Plazo 2010-2012, al igual que una exhibición de pósteres científicos, que en esta oportunidad sobrepasan de 100.

Aprovechando las nuevas tecnologías, la KSW09 tendrá un cubrimiento interactivo que incluye un despliegue diario de fotografías en Flickr, RSS para que los usuarios puedan suscribirse y recibir actualización, también habrá un blog (en inglés y en español) y se hará uso de herramientas como Slideshare, para facilitar el acceso a todo el material que saldrá de este encuentro.

CIAT knowledge sharing week

CIAT's Knowledge Sharing Week (KSW09) started on Monday, 18 May.

Apart from presentations, project discussions, and planning activities, there will also be time for reviewing and streamlining the Center's Mid-Term Plan 2010-2012. This year the 4th Scientific Posters Exhibit has attracted over 100 posters.

Taking advantage of new technologies, KSW09 will offer interactive coverage including a daily display of photos in Flickr; RSS so users can subscribe and receive updates; and a blog in both English andSpanish. Tools such as Slideshare will also be used to facilitate the access to all the materials resulting from this event.

Information sharing for Responsible Fisheries

Underpinning the implementation of the 1995 FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries (the Code), as recognized in Articles 7 to 12, is the need for two broad categories of information: general information about the Code (its goals, coverage, etc.) and specialized and technical information to support research, resource management and use, policy and development.

Many FAO Members, in particular developing countries, have indicated that the lack of access to timely, relevant and accurate information is a serious constraint to the implementation of the Code.

In order to highlight the many issues involved in information and knowledge sharing in the context of the Code, FAO has elaborated Technical Guidelines, paying particular attention to the needs of developing countries. 

This short document summarizes information constraints in developing countries and proposed actions for countries, institutions and donors to address them.

Las TICs aplicadas a la ganadería

Las Tecnologías de Información y Comunicación (TICs) también pueden ser aprovechadas en la ganadería. Paraguay será sede de un encuentro que reunirá a expertos de ambas áreas.

Se celebrará un Encuentro TICs y Ganadería, durante los días 18, 19 y 20 de mayo de 2009 en Paraguay, en el que expertos de América Latina y de otros países, así como de organismos multilaterales, como la FAO, la OIT y la Unión Europea, se reunirán para intercambiar conocimientos y políticas que sirvan de base a la transferencia de tecnología relacionadas con las aplicación al sector ganadero de las TICs.

Information and knowledge sharing guidelines for fisheries

A new report from the FAO Fisheries and Aquaculture Department provides technical guidelines on issues involved in information and knowledge sharing in the fisheries sector, paying particular attention to the needs of developing countries.

The Guidelines aim to foster a better understanding of the issues involved so stakeholders can obtain the essential information they need and so they can make available their own information and knowledge for the public good

IRRI science more accessible with open licenses and social media

The April-June 2009 issue Rice Today contains a great article about rice science in the digital age.

The story essentially introduces some of the pathways used by the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) to maximise the accessibility of its research outputs. These include adoption of a creative commons licence and publishing on several platforms - Google Books, Flickr, and YouTube.

A related presentation by IRRI's Gene Hettel - 'Adopting and Utilizing Creative Commons to Facilitate the Dissemination of Rice Knowledge and Technology' - gives a vivid insight into IRRI's CC approach to licensing and shows examples from the different platforms.

The presentation concludes: "Creative Commons: the 'pot of gold' for users of rice information around the world!"

Intercambio de información para la Pesca Responsable

Tras la aplicación del Código de Conducta para la Pesca Responsable de la FAO, de 1995 (el Código), como se reconoce en los artículos 7 a 12, subyace la necesidad de dos grandes categorías de información: información general sobre el Código (sus objetivos, cobertura, etc.) e información técnica y especializada para apoyar la investigación, la ordenación y el uso de los recursos, la política y el desarrollo.

Muchos Miembros de la FAO, en particular los países en desarrollo, han indicado que la falta de acceso a información pertinente y fidedigna en tiempo oportuno es un grave obstáculo a la aplicación del Código.

Con el fin de poner de relieve las numerosas cuestiones relacionadas con el intercambio de información y conocimientos en el contexto del Código, la FAO ha elaborado directrices técnicas, prestando especial atención a las necesidades de los países en desarrollo.

En este documento se resumen las dificultades relativas a la información en los países en desarrollo y las medidas propuestas para los países, las instituciones y los donantes para hacer frente a ellas.

Échange d'information pour une pêche responsable

L’application du Code de conduite de la FAO pour une pêche responsable de 1995 requiert, comme il ressort des articles 7 à 12, deux grandes catégories d’informations: des informations à caractère général concernant le Code (objectifs, champ d’application, etc.) et des informations techniques et spécialisées pour appuyer la recherche, la gestion et l’utilisation des ressources, les politiques et le développement.

De nombreux Membres de la FAO, notamment les pays en développement, ont indiqué que le manque d’accès à des informations pertinentes, précises et à jour nuisait à la mise en application du Code.

Afin de mettre en lumière les nombreux enjeux liés à l’échange d’information et de connaissances dans le contexte du Code, la FAO a élaboré des directives techniques, en donnant une attention particulière aux exigences des pays en développement.

Ce document présente une synthèse des problèmes d’information enregistrés dans les pays en développement, et les mesures proposées aux pays, aux institutions et aux donateurs pour les résoudre.

RECOFI Regional Aquaculture Information System online

In March this year, the Regional Aquaculture Information System (RAIS) Web site, created by the FAO Fisheries and Aquaculture Department under the aegis of the Regional Commission for Fisheries (RECOFI) went online.

RAIS aims to facilitate the exchange of aquaculture information in the Gulf area among regional experts and stakeholders and to promote and develop a sustainable aquaculture industry.

A recent report summarizes the different steps which have lead to the establishment of the system including actions that should be undertaken by Member countries to consolidate the system to enhance regional aquaculture information sharing and dissemination.

Panamá - en zonas rurales: mejor conexión y comunicación

Entre los ensayos realizados estuvo la prueba de teléfonos "Skype", que no es más que una aplicación que permite hacer llamadas por internet sin costo adicional. (Foto: Cortesía)

"Por aquí todo el mundo tiene un celular, como quien tiene un radio", afirmaba hace unas semanas el director un centro Básico de Educación en la Comarca Ngäbe -Buglé, pero al mismo tiempo, confesaba que la falta de electrificación y las variaciones en la cobertura celular, reducen la capacidad de comunicación, dentro de la propia comunidad y entre las zonas aledañas y más allá.

La situación se repite en muchas zonas rurales a lo largo y ancho del país, por lo que aprovechar al máximo las capacidades ya instaladas para mejorar los canales de comunicación y el intercambio de información, es uno de los tantos objetivos que persigue un nuevo proyecto denominado "Red del Campo".

Tout simplement, il encourage les organisations aussi bien que les particuliers à assurer le libre accès aux données, informations, expertises et connaissances relatives à la conservation de la biodiversité.

Vietnam: Internet improves rural lives

Project brings 10,000 online in remote areas.

An estimated 10,000 people in rural areas of three provinces will have better access to the internet with the implementation of a US$2.1 million project supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Work on the project was kicked off by the Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC) on Monday. It is hoped better internet access could help farmers.

"Bringing internet to rural areas will be of great importance to help erase the gap between these areas and urban areas, as well as help changing the life of people living here," said Deputy Minister of MIC Tran Duc Lai.

This project, along with other programmes of the Government to bring IT to rural areas, aims to help eliminate factors which contribute to poverty.

Conservation commons: Sharing of knowledge resources to advance conservation

The Conservation Commons is the expression of a cooperative effort of non-governmental organizations, international and multi-lateral organizations, governments, academia, and the private sector, to improve open access to and unrestricted use of, data, information and knowledge related to the conservation of biodiversity with the belief that this will contribute to improving conservation outcomes.

At its simplest, it encourages organizations and individuals alike to ensure open access to data, information, expertise and knowledge related to the conservation of biodiversity.

Vietnam: Selling agricultural products via text message

VietNamNet Bridge – For the first time, Vietnamese farmers can search for prices, offer goods for sale and purchase agricultural products by mobile phone.

The Viettel Media Centre and the Information Technology and Statistics Centre under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development have combined to launch a service that enables farmers to search for agricultural information by using mobile phones.

The service, called iNhaNong, was introduced in November 2008. iNhaNong is a software product that is installed in mobile phones to help users to look for agricultural information in 20 provinces in Vietnam. Users don’t need to have an Internet connection, they can still get information about the prices of agricultural products, offer goods for sale and purchase agricultural products by sending text messages.

El Parlamento Europeo pide adelantar más fondos para mejorar internet en las zonas rurales

El pleno del Parlamento Europeo (PE) ha pedido hoy adelantar la concesión de los fondos destinados a mejorar las conexiones de banda ancha en las zonas rurales, dentro del plan de reactivación de la UE para luchar contra la crisis.

El plan aprobado por los líderes de la UE incluye la concesión de 5.000 millones de euros, de los que 1.020 millones serán para mejorar internet en el campo y otros desafíos dentro de las políticas de desarrollo rural.

Chile: Comienza proyecto de Internet Rural que permitirá acceso al 92% de las personas del país

Cuatro empresas y consorcios privados presentaron propuestas técnicas y económicas para invertir en la construcción de redes de conectividad digital en 1470 localidades rurales de Chile. Tras la apertura pública de las postulaciones, el Consejo de Ministros del Fondo de Desarrollo de las Telecomunicaciones, adjudicó el concurso a Inverca Telecomunicaciones S.A., ligada al operador asiático Packet One, experto en redes Wimax de última generación.

El proyecto movilizará más de 100 millones de dólares, beneficiando a tres millones de chilenos, cerca de 850 mil hogares, más de 800 escuelas, postas y 90 mil pymes del mundo rural, asociadas principalmente al agro y el turismo, permitiendo que Chile de un salto en cobertura de redes y oferta de servicios TICs superior al 20%, pasando de 71% a 92% de cobertura poblacional.

CEPAL revela enorme brecha de acceso a internet

El acceso a internet en los hogares del segmento más rico de la población latinoamericana supera en 30 veces al acceso del segmento más pobre y el promedio de acceso a un computador en los hogares de áreas urbanas es nueve veces más alto que el acceso a un computador en los hogares de zonas rurales.

Esta realidad puede ser constatada por medio del Sistema de Información Estadístico de las Tecnologías de la Información y las Comunicaciones (TIC) de la Comisión Económica para América Latina y el Caribe (CEPAL), presentado en Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, el 7 de abril, que analizó a 14 países de la región.

El sistema en línea, que consta de 47 variables relacionadas al uso y acceso a internet y 20 variables socioeconómicas que incluyen ingreso, nivel educativo, ocupación, sexo y zona geográfica, permite hacer comparaciones a través del tiempo, dentro de los países, con otros países y a nivel regional.

“Al cuantificar estas brechas y avances, se pueden identificar posibles focos para las políticas públicas en las poblaciones y los países que representan mayores desventajas en la adopción y uso productivo de las TIC”, dice la CEPAL. “Así, es una herramienta poderosa para la elaboración y evaluación de políticas públicas y estrategias relacionadas con las TIC en la región”.

India debuts 'agricultural Wikipedia'

Indian scientists have launched an 'agricultural Wikipedia' to act as an online repository of agricultural information in the country.

It aims to disseminate crop- and region-specific information to farmers and agricultural extension workers — who communicate agricultural information and research findings to farmers — and provide information for students and researchers.

The website currently contains information on nine crops — rice, wheat, chickpea, pigeon pea, vegetable pea, lychee, sugarcane, groundnut and sorghum — but its creators say that all agriculture-related topics will be eventually covered.

African farmers get geospatial info on their phones

[NAIROBI] A pilot project that uses mobile phones to alert farmers in remote regions to where they can buy drought-tolerant beans has been launched in Kenya — just one of a set of pilot projects using mobile and geospatial technologies to improve communication of important information to farmers across Africa.

In the first step of the system researchers confirm where dealers are stocking drought-tolerant beans, mapping their locations. Scientists then use mobile phone services to send the information to government extension workers who have second-generation mobile phones, common in Africa. They can then relay the information to farmers in person or via their phones.

Another project in Kenya uses mobile phones to provide farmers and government workers with information about the soil. Also, other project improves market access for smallholders by providing the daily price for commodities at a variety of nearby markets as well as options for buying farm equipment or obtaining agriculture-related funding.
