FAO consultation on agricultural information in Africa

In May 2004, FAO held an Expert Consultation to develop a strategic vision for documenting and disseminating agricultural knowledge and research in Africa.

The report of the consultation identifies key trends and issues that will affect the operation of information and communication systems in agricultural science and technology in the coming decade, envisions the documentation and communication mechanisms that will need to be in place by 2010 to maximize the impact of agricultural science and technology, and recommends approaches that will achieve that vision, including roles and responsibilities of different stakeholders.

Participants concluded that the forging of inclusive partnerships is important to avoid duplication and promote coordination of initiatives. There is need for advocacy of the importance of communication, raising awareness of the new opportunities, developing skills of researchers and information and communication managers, development of toolboxes and guidelines, and implementation of pilot projects to demonstrate new communication technologies and practices.
