Empowering farmers in India through video: Interview with Rikin Gandhi

The Agrilinks blog at USAID has an interview with Rikin Gandhi - CEO of Digital Green.

According to the interview, "the unique components of the Digital Green system include:
  1. a participatory process for local video production,
  2. a human-mediated instruction model for video dissemination and training,
  3. a hardware and software technology platform for exchanging data in areas with limited Internet and electrical grid connectivity, and
  4. an iterative model to progressively better address the needs and interests of the community with analytical tools and interactive phone-based feedback channels."

Radio and video help trigger rice innovation in Africa

The Africa Rice Center (WARDA) is using radio and video to get information about improved technologies and market opportunities.

An article in the International Journal of Agricultural Sustainability shows how "farmer-to-farmer video has great potential to enhance sustainable agriculture by encouraging local innovations."

Audio based farmer information systems: RAILS Consultation

FARA is currently working on an inventory of projects about audio based farmer information systems and on Agricultural Information on Demand using mobile phone [in Africa].

They are particularly interested in Farmer Information Systems in Africa which are going beyond Market Information Systems:
  • Voice-enabled information delivery services
  • National farmers information services
  • Dial-up Radio: Agricultural information on demand
  • Extension services based on mobile phone and database monitoring
  • E-learning for basic skills, agricultural education and market information
  • Video-based approaches

Communicating social research with video

One of the opportunities provided by 'new' social media or web 2.0 tools is to help bring research messages to audiences usually not reached. Pathways South Asia, a research and policy NGO in Bangladesh, is using video to communicate research on the empowerment of women.

FAO on YouTube

Thanks to the announcement on the Lubin Library blog, we can see the new FAO space on YouTube.

With its shorter video's and more web 2.0 closeness to general audiences, the new channel seems to complement the more formal and more established FAO webcasting site.

Zooming-in zooming-out: Communicating science with farmers, with video

Paul Van Mele from the Africa Rice Center (WARDA) recently drew attention to the use of video to communicate science with farmers. Commenting on a DFID research consultation, he recommended that DFID support "multi-actor communication teams in producing regionally relevant and locally appropriate learning tools/programs."

In an article in the International Journal of Agricultural Sustainability, he describes how the 'Zooming-in Zooming-out' approach helps extension service providers create regionally relevant learning materials that are locally appropriate.

Farmers as film-makers

The latest ICT Update from CTA focuses on Participatory Video as a tool for farmer-led communication.

According to the editors, "Communities can use video to document indigenous knowledge and to record best practices that can be shared with other communities. Participatory video is especially effective as a tool for monitoring and evaluating development projects and advocacy programmes. The contents are available in English and French.
