In the face of extreme food price volatility and food shortages in Haiti following the January 12 earthquake, FAO has developed an interactive tool to guide international agencies and NGOs involved in food security across the country.

Frente a la elevada volatilidad de los precios y la escasez de alimentos en Haití tras el terremoto del pasado 12 de enero, la FAO ha desarrollado una herramienta interactiva para orientar a las organizaciones internacionales y las ONGs involucradas en la seguridad alimentaria del país caribeño.

La Herramienta de emergencia para la seguridad alimentaria en Haití reúne datos de diversas fuentes autorizadas y presenta la información en forma de mapa interactivo. Los temas que comprende incluyen las carreteras transitables, calendarios de cosechas, distribución geográfica de los medios de subsistencia e información sobre los daños sufridos.

Jamaica launches agriculture market information system

Jamaica Agriculture Market Information System (JAMIS), was developed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (MOAF) with support from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), CDC Development Solutions and App Venture, to collect and disseminate pricing data of agricultural commodities traded in the local and regional market place, on a weekly basis.

The primary function of the JAMIS is to compile and disseminate information that will aid producers, purchasers, consumers, and distributors in the sale and purchase of agricultural commodities nationally and internationally.

Municipios en República Dominicana se unen a las comunidades rurales con acceso a Internet

Dos municipios reciben dos Centros Tecnológicos Comunitarios m(CTC), con los que suman un total de 56 centros ubicados a nivel nacional. “Este CTC es un aporte al futuro del pueblo, con el que se puede encauzar el porvenir de los jóvenes y se pueden desarrollar las capacidades. Los jóvenes de la comunidad de Miches nos comprometemos a esforzarse para lograr el propósito que usted tanto anhela”, afirmó la joven Johanny Díaz Santana, hablando en representación de la juventud de esa comunidad.

Con estos centros la primera dama busca que los usuarios tengan la oportunidad de mejorar sus técnicas productivas, agrícolas y pesqueras, además de acceder a servicios de educación sin tener que desplazarse lejos. También podrán realizar el bachillerato en línea, a través del programa Bachinet, que promueve su Despacho.

República Dominicana: Indotel lleva tecnología digital a zona montañosa

La nueva sala tecnológica que inauguró el Instituto Dominicano de las Telecomunicaciones (Indotel) en Chichiguas de Gurabono solo es la número 59 que ha instalado la institución en Santiago, sino que se ha constituido en una novedosa fuente de acceso al conocimiento para cientos de niños, niñas, jóvenes y adultos de esta montañosa comunidad del Cibao. Se señala además que Indotel ha logrado reducir la brecha tecnológica a nivel nacional con la instalación de más de mil salas tecnológicas que han impactado a cientos de miles de dominicanos que ahora tienen acceso a computadoras y en muchos casos a Internet de alta velocidad.

El senador Domínguez Brito afirmó que en República Dominicana se registra "una revolución en el área de la tecnología...verdaderamente en la República Dominicana se ha iniciado una revolución en el área de la tecnología, de la formación y la capacitación; si hoy disponemos de mejores recursos humanos en el área tecnológica se debe al esfuerzo del Indotel, de su presidente y a todo el empeño de todo el equipo que ha venido trabajando, laborando y desarrollando todo este sistema", enfatizó.

El legislador Víctor Suárez anunció asimismo que gestiona llevar el sistema de comunicación inalámbrica Wi Fi a Gurabo, a fin de que la niñez, la juventud y moradores de esta comunidad tengan acceso a Internet gratis y, por ende, a bibliotecas virtuales, cursos de inglés en línea y otros beneficios del conocimiento.

Potencian servicios de información agrícola caribeños

“La situación y el panorama de los servicios de información agrícola en el Caribe: construyendo liderazgo y compromiso para emprender acciones conjuntas” es el nombre de la reunión que congregará a 20 especialistas en información del Caribe, el 13 y el 14 de noviembre, en Trinidad y Tobago.

La actividad, organizada por el Instituto Interamericano de Cooperación para la Agricultura (IICA) y el Centro Técnico para la Cooperación Agrícola y Rural (CTA, por sus siglas en inglés), tiene por objetivo lograr una mayor integración entre los servicios de información caribeños y los internacionales.

CaRAPN - weaving the policy net for agriculture in the Caribbean

The web site of the Caribbean Regional Agricultural Policy Network (CaRAPN) aims to support the wider involvement of all stakeholders in agricultural policy making processes in the region.

According to an article in December 2006 issue of Agribeat by IICA and CTA, the network is an "excellent source of agricultural policy information, providing news and issues, policy documents among others."

The network makes heavy use of information and communication technologies - ICTs - arguing that they "have a great deal to offer in the development of a policy network. They offer opportunities to enhance dialogue & communications for improving the policy process for enhancing agriculture and rural life in the 21st century. The use of ICTs in networking in a region such as the Caribbean, assists in reducing the geographical barriers, as well as improving the rapid, timely and cost effective flow of and access to information necessary to support the agricultural policy process."

CaRAPN's main networking and communication tool is it's web site. This "robust ICT facilitates virtual dialogue of its members and the sharing of knowledge and experiences in ‘real time’. It also facilitates the storage of a large quantity of information (reports, backgrounders, updates on projects etc) which can be easily updated as necessary."

The web site features information about the network, a Resource Centre (virtual library), e-forum (virtual discussion room) for members, news, calendar of events and links to other networks and organizations.

Mass media and agricultural policies in the Caribbean

The December 2006 issue of Agribeat by IICA and CTA contains the materials mobilised at a workshop to explore how agricultural policy information can be disseminated through the mass media.

Presenters addressed the current and emerging key regional agricultural policy issues and initiatives, the methods and techniques of agricultural policy communication and dissemination as well as the role of policy analysts and researchers in regional agricultural policy. The interactive nature of the workshop sessions allowed for creative input by participants in the preparation of news reports and articles based on the major themes presented.

According to the report, the event was "successful in addressing its objectives." It also provided a first–time opportunity for policy officers and media professionals in the Caribbean to meet face to face, open lines of communication and establish common ground for the development of a Caribbean Agricultural Reporters Network (CARN).

The use of ICTs to enhance the dissemination of agricultural policy information and foster greater awareness of it throughout the Media came out as one of the more immediate and practical recommendations of the workshop.
