YouthConnect launched in China to connect rural and urban schools

Dell YouthConnect, a global program designed to support education and digital inclusion initiatives for underserved youth, was launched in Beijing. Dell awarded $2 million in cash and in-kind grants of products to the China Education Development Foundation (CEDF) and the China Youth Development Foundation (CYDF).

The program will connect rural and urban schools through technology and create an interactive education network that can realize resources sharing between rural and urban areas. As a result, the education quality in rural areas can be improved while nurturing collaboration, information sharing, and creativity.

Prior to the launch of the Dell YouthConnect Program, Dell has donated over $740,000 to set up 25 Dell Learning Centers in 15 cities across China since 2006. Dell YouthConnect was first inaugurated in February 2009 with grants totaling more than $2.7 million, to 11 organizations in Brazil, India, and Mexico. The program will also be rolled out in four more countries by the end of this year.

US mobile agriculture lab in West Virginia to embark on tour

The West Virginia Farm Bureau Agriculture Education Science Lab will be hitting the road September 14 for its first full year of criss-crossing the state to bring agricultural education to schools.

A self-contained classroom, the mobile lab comes with a certified teacher who helps second through fifth-grade students complete a scientific experiment and provides an age-appropriate lesson for the younger students.

New AGIS Book on Geospatial technology and agriculture industries

The New AGIS Agriculture Book is one of the first texts written specifically for agriculture.

AGIS Introduction to Geospatial Technology includes ten lessons designed to demonstrate key concepts, software capabilities, and future opportunities in the geospatial industry. The lessons contain overviews of career profiles including examples of industries and individuals that use this technology. Students will gain hands-on experience using industry-leading ESRI's ArcGIS software in eight lessons that explore agriculture, business, information technology, logistics, public safety, health science, tourism, and technology engineering.

“We feel this title will be a valuable resource for instructors in geospatial technology and agriculture industries,” stated Eddie Hanebuth, Digital Quest president. “The agriculture industry is actively using geospatial analysis, and we wanted to create a tool to bring this technology straight to the classroom.”

Chile: Liceos Agrícolas se capacitan en recursos de información

La Fundación para la Innovación Agraria y el Ministerio de Educación con el apoyo de RedagroChile a través de la Universidad Católica de Temuco, Universidad de la Frontera e INIA, dieron inicio al Ciclo de Talleres Regionales en Recursos de Información para la Innovación para el Sector Silvoagropecuario, ésta actividad tiene como objetivo fortalecer las capacidades en búsqueda de información especializada de coordinadores y encargados de Bibliotecas Escolares CRA de los Liceos Agrícolas del país, así como también estimular la generación de vínculos y mutua colaboración entre los participantes. La actividad comenzó con la presentación de la Plataforma I+D+i desarrollada por FIA y luego los participantes apoyados por bibliotecarios de la región aprendieron el uso de catálogos en línea, bases de datos, bibliotecas digitales y buscadores.

El taller contó con la participación de más de 20 encargados y coordinadores de los Centros de Recursos para el Aprendizaje de los liceos agrícolas de La Araucanía. La actividad fue muy valorada por los participantes, según comentó uno de los participantes “con la herramientas que nos han entregado no solo podremos ser apoyo para los alumnos sino también para los profesores de area.”

La actividad iniciada en Temuco y cubriendo las localidades de Traiguén, Cajón, Freire, Manzanares, Gorbea, Renaico, Vilcún, Chol Chol, Teodoro Schmidt, Galvarino, Nueva Imperial, Lautaro y Roble Huacho y Huiscapi, seguirá su recorrido por diversas regiones del país que apoyarán el desarrollo de estas capacitaciones.

Virtual communities of practice and agricultural extension

In a series of articles in the Journal of Extension, Patricia Sobrero reviews literature and experiences concerning virtual teamwork, virtual communities and learning in an electronic online environment.

The first paper - Social Learning Through Virtual Teams and Communities - contrasts virtual teams, virtual learning communities, and virtual communities of practice.

The second paper - Essential Components for Successful Virtual Learning Communities - examines ways to to build successful virtual communities of practice in Cooperative Extension and across engaged universities.

The third paper - Virtual Communities of Practice: A 21st Century Method for Learning, Programming, and Developing Professionally - looks at how virtual Communities of Practice (CoP) can support the Extension mission.

Nicaragua: Tecnología llega a escuelas rurales

Seis mil alumnos, de 15 centros de departamentos del Norte en Nicaragua son los beneficiados con el programa “Creando acceso a la tecnología en las comunidades cafetaleras” y consiste en la entrega de computadoras portátiles con el patrocinio de empresas del sector privado y el apoyo de la Cámara de Comercio Americana de Nicaragua (Amcham).

“Esta iniciativa es única en su tipo, ya que integra no sólo la introducción de la tecnología a la zona rural, sino que también está acompañada de un estudio especializado que traerá muchas enseñanzas para la educación rural en Nicaragua, así como entender el impacto de la tecnología en estas comunidades”, dijo Baltodano, gerente y uno de los patrocinadores.

Actualmente este proyecto beneficia a 15 escuelas y a un total de 6,300 estudiantes en diferentes zonas de Nicaragua, a fin de que todos los estudiantes de la zona rural tengan acceso a la tecnología como al Internet y de esta manera facilitarles a los estudiantes el interés de investigación.

Panamá: Bachilleres agropecuarios y futuros docentes se suman a la Red del Campo

Con el propósito de promover entre la población estudiantil, perteneciente a los bachilleratos agropecuarios y de educación, los servicios integrados que ofrece la Red del Campo (RdC), se efectuaron recientemente una serie de conferencias y talleres con los alumnos graduandos de diversos centros educativos.

Entre los temas abordados destacaron: el aprovechamiento de las tecnologías de información y comunicación (TIC’s) en la educación, la reducción de la brecha digital en las zonas rurales, la importancia del acceso a información oportuna y verás para la toma de decisiones en la actividad agropecuaria, las ventajas y beneficios de la asociatividad mediante la conformación de “redes” y muchos más.

Open educational resources - State of the art

The February 2009 issue of Open Learning is dedicated to Open Educational Resources (OER) - "teaching, learning and research resources that reside in the public domain or have been released under an intellectual property license that permits their free use or re-purposing by others."

The special issue, appropriately openly accessible, "present an overview of the OER movement, and the perspective is largely that of the OER provider."

In the words of Susan D'Antoni: "The production and use of OER raises a number of issues, and the concluding article addresses a crucial concern that brings us back to the perspective of the first article - open licensing. If materials are to be openly and freely shared, they must be licensed in a manner that promotes this objective. Ahrash Bissell's article aims to explain the logic of the open licensing that is essential to OER and to explore related considerations."

Docentes de zonas rurales de Costa Rica se capacitan por Internet

Unos 3.000 maestros y profesores de zonas rurales se capacitan en las materias que imparten sin desplazarse a la capital (San José,) a través de un plan de cómputo e Internet.

Con la misma herramienta aprenden sobre nuevos métodos educativos y temas de actualidad, como ambiente y cuidados para la salud.

El proyecto reduce las dificultades del Ministerio de Educación Pública (MEP) para capacitar a estos profesionales, al evitar la pérdida de tiempo de clases en el viaje de los maestros a cursos en la capital.

“El primer paso fue capacitar a los profesores en tecnología. Muchos no sabían lo que es Internet, nunca habían mandado un correo electrónico y mucho menos conocían lo que era un blog , o un curso interactivo. Ahora ya manejan el sistema sin problemas”, explicó Ileana Ruiz, encargada del sistema de Actualización de Maestros en Educación (AME).

Esta plataforma virtual ofrece a los docentes exámenes en línea, almacenamiento de archivos, notificaciones vía correo electrónico y acceso a aulas virtuales.

Emerging technologies for teaching, learning, and research

University of Arizona's Jeanne Pfander and Barb Hutchinson alert us to the 2009 Horizon Report that looks into emerging trends and challenges in teaching, learning, research and creative expression in "learning-focused organizations."

Among the key trends identified: "Increasing globalization continues to affect the way we work, collaborate, and communicate. Information technologies are having a significant impact on how people work, play, gain information, and collaborate. Increasingly, those who use technology in ways that expand their global connections are more likely to advance, while those who do not will find themselves on the sidelines. "

Other key trends:

• "Notions of collective intelligence and mass amateurization are redefining scholarship as we grapple with issues of top-down control and grassroots scholarship. Today’s learners want to be active participants in the learning process – not mere listeners; they have a need to control their environments, and they are used to easy access to the staggering amount of content and knowledge available at their fingertips." 
  
• "Experience with and affinity for games as learning tools is an increasingly universal characteristic among those entering higher education and the workforce."
  
• "Visualization tools are making information more meaningful and insights more intuitive."

Knowledge sharing, education and learning in agriculture

In Maputo last week, the the CGIAR ICT-KM Program, GFAR, COL and YPARD got together to discuss "Knowledge Sharing, Agricultural Education and Learning through Collaboration and Partnerships."

The workshop aimed to cross and connect several different strands and discussions (research, knowledge, education, learning, ... ) and attracted an interesting mix of people. After stimulating scene-setting plenary discussions on the first morning, the participants joined groups to discuss 'formal education', 'rural learning communities' and 'KM strategies in the CGIAR.'
